Start with protection. A quality mattress protector is the least glamorous purchase you will make and one of the most important. It keeps the mattress clean stay after stay, adds a quiet layer of softness, and saves you from replacing a mattress far too early. Waterproof and quilted is the sweet spot.

Then choose your sheets by feel, not by thread count. Thread count is mostly marketing above a certain point. What matters is the weave. Percale is crisp and cool, the hotel-sheet feel, and it breathes beautifully in warmer months. Sateen is silky and a touch warmer, lovely in winter.
